One of the most unique structures in the country. Once a summer vacation home to author/illustrator William Donahey and wife Mary. This small barrel shaped cottage once sat on the shores of Sable Lake just west of town. It was moved to the corner of Lake ave. in 1937 and was used as a visitor center, ice cream shop and gift shop until 2003 when the histroical society purchased the building and lovingly restored it. Today it is a popular museum showcasing the life and works of William Donahey.

This unique five sided structure was the towns hub of mail and information for almost 70 years. It now housed many interesting artifacts and information about the history of our beautiful little town.

Located in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, this light stands on Au Sable Point on the south shore of Lake Superior, approximately 12 miles west of Grand Marais, Michigan. Built in 1873-1874, the light tower's base diameter is 16 feet with a height of 87 feet. The lens focal plane is 107 feet above lake level. A fog signal building was built in 1897. The original two-story keepers dwelling was attached to the light tower in the back. In 1909, the building was added on to the front so it would accommodate two families. One lived upstairs, one down. The head keepers residence was built in 1909. Visiting the Au Sable Light Station To visit the Au Sable Light Station, travel to the Hurricane River Campground located 12 miles west of Grand Marais on Alger County Road H-58. Park in the day use parking area near the bridge. It is a 1-1/2 mile walk (one way) to the lighthouse. Walk the hiking trail to the east beginning at the picnic area near the Hurricane River mouth. The trail is on the historic U.S. Coast Guard road to the light station. Be alert for occasional vehicle traffic. On the beach below the trail, exposed shipwreck remains dot the shoreline. Watch for the signs and steps to the beach along the trail. Bicycles and pets are not permitted on this trail and at the light station. Summer Lighthouse Tours Au Sable Light Station tours are scheduled Wednesday through Sunday from June 10 through September 15 (as staffing permits). No tours on Monday and Tuesday. Tours begin at 11 a.m. and run through 5 p.m. The 30-40 minute Park Ranger guided tours begin at the lighthouse east porch. Register at the Au Sable Maritime Museum for the next tour. Tour fee is $3 for those 6 and older. Correct change is greatly appreciated. Fees payable inside the maritime museum. Lighthouse visitors are reminded that the area includes very sandy soils, narrow sidewalks, and steps to access the buildings.

In 1990, Ronald Marshall purchased the museum from Axel. They had been close friends since Axel taught Ron how to play cribbage in 1970. Ron made major repairs to the museum building over the next few years. I met Ron in 1991 and told him how important the museum and Axel were to me. In exchange for a couple of Axel’s agates, I wrote a poem for the museum titled Perspective. After reading the poem and without saying anything to me, Ron decided that if he ever were to sell the museum -- he would sell it to me. Finally, in 1997 while agate hunting together, Ron stunned me into silence and offered to sell me the museum. After the purchase was completed in August 1998, the building was completely refurbished. The history items, saved by the Niemi family for over 90 years, were sorted and displayed for the first time. My mineral collect

A beautiful cascading waterfall plummeting over 50 feet and winding its way towards Lake Superior.

Transport yourself to a bygon ara when logs were harvested and hauled to the lakeshore by horse and cart to make the 300 foot drop to the waiting waters of Lake Superior. From there they were taken to the nearby harbour and many waiting saw mills in Grand Marais.

The second largest waterfall east of the Mississippi. You will want to spend the day exploring the area by foot or rowboat. Also a great time to hop on up to the Whitefish point shipwreck museum.

You name it, Pictured Rocks has it. From sandstone cliffs plummeting some 300 feet to the ever magnificent Lake Superior to several waterfalls, lakes and miles of burgeoning forests. Whether you are here for a day or a week you will leave with a deep desire to see more of this pristine lakeshore park that stretches for over 40 miles from Grand Marais to Munising.
